HSBC BANK and DINAR AIRLINES FLY 10,000
PENNIES DATED 2000 to PATAGONIA
"The Magic Penny is also educative"
the headline in the Puerto Madryn newspaper Jornada.
Argentinian coins unlike the British penny, cannot be picked up by a magnet.
In July, thanks to the assistance of the Magic Penny Trust, the Royal Mint, the British Embassy, the HSBC bank, and Dinar airlines, 10,000 freshly minted one penny coins dated 2000 were transported from Llantrisant, Wales to Puerto Madryn, Patagonia.
It was at the site of what is now Puerto Madryn that the first Welsh immigrants to Patagonia landed in July 1865. As part of the annual local celebrations, the mayor of Madryn and children joined in a special display of the educative value of the coins at the town science club. As always, the levitating apparatus, designed by Nabeel Shirazee whilst a student at the University of Cardiff, fascinated everyone.
A bag of 2000 of the coins were presented to the mayor for use in local schools. Thanks to the local bus sevice Mar y Valle bags of coins were later transported inland to Paso de Indios and Esquel for rural children to enjoy as part of a teaching project entitled Leonardo in Patagonia.
